The same subscription trap wore dozens of brand names.

At the Federal Trade Commission’s request, a US federal court temporarily halted an enterprise that the agency alleges operated deceptive subscription schemes through 15 corporations and dozens of products. Named offerings include MadMuscles, Unimeal, Wisey, PDF Guru, Lumi and Nebula.

The FTC alleges that products were advertised as free or available for a low one-time price while recurring terms were obscured, that customers received unauthorised or duplicate charges, and that cancellation was unavailable or ineffective. The complaint says five products generated nearly US$250 million from early 2023 to mid-2025. These are allegations and the case will be decided by the court.

A brand is not the right unit of detection

The FTC says the operators repeatedly launched products, registered corporate identities and opened merchant accounts. When each storefront is reviewed alone, complaints can appear too small or too new to show the shared system behind them.

Payment processors, app stores and regulators need entity resolution across company officers, domains, application certificates, analytics identifiers, bank destinations, support infrastructure and merchant descriptors. The aim is not guilt by association; it is making repeated patterns visible early enough for a human investigation.

Cancellation evidence must outlive the storefront

Customers should keep the offer, checkout screen, bank descriptor and cancellation confirmation together. A confirmation should include the product, legal merchant, effective end date and a reference that remains usable even if the consumer-facing brand disappears.

For legitimate subscription businesses, the engineering standard is equally concrete: one authoritative billing state, an authenticated cancellation endpoint, idempotent requests and an immutable audit event delivered to the customer. A support script should never be able to contradict the billing system silently.
