A comparison is false precision when one seller shows the complete price and another waits until the customer has invested time.
On 19 August 2026, the UK Competition and Markets Authority opened consumer-protection investigations into Trainline, Virgin Atlantic and RED Driving School. The regulator is examining whether customers were shown the total price upfront when buying train and coach tickets, holidays or driving lessons.
The investigations are at an early stage and the CMA has reached no conclusion that the companies broke the law. Each business had previously received an advisory letter about its obligations. The formal cases followed continued monitoring of how mandatory fees were presented.
Drip pricing breaks the comparison layer
A mandatory charge revealed late in checkout does more than increase the bill. It makes the search results unreliable. By the time the extra appears, a customer may have selected dates, seats, lesson times or passenger details and may be less willing to start again with another provider.
The technical fix is not a disclaimer. Every search result and offer card should be built from an all-in price object containing unavoidable taxes and fees for the selected transaction. If a mandatory amount changes after selection, the interface should update the total immediately and identify the cause before the customer continues.
New powers make the interface evidence
If the CMA finds an infringement, it can seek compensation for affected customers and fine a company up to 10 per cent of global turnover. The regulator says its strengthened powers have already produced refunds and fines in other online-pricing cases.
That puts more weight on ordinary product records: screenshots, price-service responses, experiment assignments and the sequence of screens a customer saw. A business that claims its total price was clear should be able to demonstrate the exact path, not point to a generic terms page after the fact.
