Futurehome put the smart in smart home behind an annual bill.

Futurehome’s subscription FAQ says the company’s subscription took effect from 26 June 2025. After a four-week trial, it says the app is locked and most paid features become unavailable without a subscription, including device control, configuration, automations, modes, shortcuts and energy services. The company says local devices can still be operated manually.

The annual charge listed in the same FAQ is 1,380 Norwegian kroner. The sharp edge is not that a cloud service costs money. It is that the system’s ordinary control surface and automation layer become conditional after the equipment has been installed in a customer’s home.

A home should survive a billing change

Futurehome says its products use open standards and that many devices may work with other smart-home platforms, though it cannot guarantee compatibility or support. That is better than a sealed ecosystem, but it still pushes migration work and uncertainty onto the household that already paid for the hardware.

The fair model makes cloud intelligence an optional upgrade and leaves local control, schedules and automations durable. A subscription should add a service. It should not hold the familiar controls for the existing service hostage.

The automation layer is the product

Connected homes commonly separate device radios, a hub, a cloud account and the mobile app. A light may still respond to a physical switch while rules coordinating many devices live in a hub configuration or cloud service.

When app control and automations are subscription-gated, the hardware remains installed but the system-level behaviour changes. Exportable configurations and documented local APIs decide whether a household can migrate without rebuilding every rule.
